Wells Canyon is the largest canyon in the state of Nebraska. The canyon received its name when settlers, long before, dug a well in the forks of the canyon and then left the well.

The homestead, where we live, sits overlooking the hills and valleys of Wells Canyon creating a breathtaking view. Over the past years, elk have migrated into the canyon. There have been sightings of mountain lions in the area as well. On any given morning, you will witness flocks of wild turkeys and herds of white-tailed or mule deer.

The world's largest elephant fossil was discovered from the banks of Wells Canyon in 1922. The 14 foot pre-historic elephant is the largest in existence that has ever been found. The "Ice Age" mammoth Archidiskodon or "Archie" roamed Nebraska approximately 50,000 years ago. The skeleton is currently on display in Elephant Hall at the University of Nebraska State Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska. You are welcome to visit the site where "Archie" was discovered.
